The Lucy Haskell Playhouse is much more than just a historic structure. It is a unique landmark that holds our beautiful Middletown neighborhood together and is enjoyed by the entire city. This 129 year old building has had its fair share of ups and downs over the years but it now faces its biggest hurdle. The building is covered in lead paint that needs to be professionally removed. The cost to remove and dispose of the many layers of lead paint may cost up to $25,000 and that’s before any repairs are made. Our fear is that the Playhouse could be closed permanently, unless we band together, raise the funds and save this historic structure. The lead paint is not the only challenge. We also need to replace or restore some of the original wood that has rotted. In addition, there is foundation work and repairs on the inside of the structure that need to be done. The roof has been repaired recently. However, we are concerned that because of its age, the slate roof may need to be completely replaced in the near future.
We would love to raise enough money to completely restore the playhouse but we want to be realistic with our goals and focus on removing the lead paint, repairing and repainting the exterior. Our ambitious plan is to raise $50,000 in 50 days! You can donate right here on our website which is linked to a PayPal account with the city of Alton, and all donations are tax deductible. If you have any questions, suggestions or would like to volunteer, please contact us via phone or email.
